Yosvany Pérez

a tobacco-drying village in rural Cuba

Born and raised in a tobacco-drying village in rural Cuba, Yosvany grew up amidst the overlapping smells of cured leaves and salt water. He inherited his inclination for fishing from his father and his superstitions from his abuela, who carefully taught him the ritual of touching doorframes to ward off bad luck. Life is a balancing act between making ends meet and nurturing the creative impulse to see the world differently—even if it means scavenging the trash for forgotten treasures that others discard.
