Tenzin Norbu has worked in the hospital laundry since his early twenties, a time when he was learning the rhythms of machines and how they mirror the rhythms of life. An accident with one of these machines took three of his fingers, but rather than succumb to bitterness, he gave each missing digit a name—a way to reclaim them. His life is punctuated by the mechanical rhythms of hospital life, from the hum of laundry presses to the midnight echoes of footsteps down antiseptic corridors.
