Mateo Salazar
the back streets of Valparaiso, Chile
Mateo Salazar runs a small pawnshop in Valparaíso, a gritty sanctuary crammed with objects of varying histories and fortunes. Each morning, he grits open the rusted door, accompanied by the echoes of seagulls, to dust off relics and categorize the weary stories that weave through the dusty corners of his shop. Self-reliance fuels his daily life, fishing at dawn and growing his food on a crumbling terrace, which he fears the city might one day devour.
