Damián Choque

a ferry landing town on Lake Titicaca, Bolivia

Damián Choque started working as an elevator mechanic at fifteen, drawn into the trade by his father before his sudden departure left a hole in their family. His days are spent in the tight, dark spaces above hotel lobbies and along the municipal piers of his town on Lake Titicaca, inching through greasy shafts and keeping watch over machinery built long before his time. The sound of a certain screen door creak from childhood haunts him into sleeplessness, the sound of metal fatigue or a bolt unscrewing motivates him to check, recheck, and triple-check his work.
